FileFusion – How does it work?

What is a hard link?

The FileFusion Technology is based on the so called ”hard links”, which seem to be normal files but whose location on disk points to the same place that another file also points at. Additionally, there is a counter storing the number of files and hard links pointing to that exact set of bytes. Is one of the hard links or files deleted, the set of bytes is not touched on disk, until all files and hard links for that set of bytes is deleted – if nothing in the file system needs the bytes anymore, they are finally removed physically from disk.

In case of renaming, other files / hard links pointing to the bytes are not influenced at all, as the name is on the side of the file / hard link pointer. When a file is worked upon, and another hard link or file is pointing towards it, and the changed file is saved, new bytes are saved on disk and the old ones keep unchanged, as the counter still shows a valid file / hard link to point to the unchanged set of bytes.

Hard links have been used under Linux and the likes for decades, and since Windows XP these also exist since NTFS reached version 3. But when Windows XP came out, disks were still spinning magnetic disks, that were massively slower, but where there were no size problems. Maybe this was a reason why nobody ever tried to use the new possibilities of NTFS for anything a real user wants to use – and also to create a nice user interface so a real user is willing to use it.

Contrary to the few competing products to FileFusion, we have worked to automatically convert all duplicate files, even if renamed, into only one original file and corresponding hard links. This way, you can gain even more disk space on tidy hard disks with just one click.

Built-in backup included

We have put the ability to reverse the FileFusion process in the software. We do not know why you should do this, but there is the possibility.

Prerequisites

FileFusion can only be used on NTFS drives. Abelssoft officially supports Windows 7 and newer Windows versions.

What happens when I close or uninstall FileFusion?

FileFusion uses the capabilities of the NTFS file system on your Windows PC to replace files with hard links. This means that you can easily turn FileFusion off or uninstall it, and everything continues to work as it should, because the Windows file system NTFS is responsible for the actual function.

Which drives or partitions does FileFusion work with?

FileFusion works only with NTFS, and only with hard disks that are connected to the computer or computer, i. e. no network drives. Furthermore, only files on the same partition can be fused, so if you have the same 1GB video on four different partitions, FileFusion will not replace any of the videos with a hard link.
